The exterior of the chip is made of plastic or ceramic and houses the semiconductor circuitry. Since the internal circuits are small and sensitive, the housing provides a protective shell and makes for easier installation. The housing has a number of wires which contact the circuitry of the chip within it. These connect to "pins" which extend beyond the chip housing and provide larger contact points to fit more easily onto a |motherboard|.
